IRS Payments - What is happening with the check you sent?

We received calls from a few clients telling us they mailed checks to the IRS for their tax payments; they have also received notification that they are delinquent in paying those taxes.

As you may have expected, this is a Covid-19 related delay. The IRS does not have the staff in office to cash the checks, but the electronic notices are still being pushed out to citizens for whom the checks haven’t been cashed.

We checked with an IRS representative who confirmed our suspicions. We were told that the check payments should not be cancelled; when they are able, the checks will be cashed, and the delinquent notices will be cancelled.

We still advise clients to hold on to letters and statements should they need to rectify anything with the IRS. In the future, look into making your payments electronically on the IRS website to ensure your payment is received in a timely manner.
